The city had been growing unusually quiet lately. It seemed that fewer people were wandering the streets and alleyways every night. Even the daylight did not bring many out into the city. Kael had wondered once or twice, with a mixture of humor and seriousness, if the immortals here had not finally devoured the population. Kael often roamed about the city during the day while Kerra slept, picking out those mortals who could benefit from loss of limb or eye and maybe donate a kidney to the cause of him making them see the error of their ways. He would absorb the energy that he would steal from those whom he would pass by or see across the way. But the pickings seemed to be quickly dwindling lately and he would soon return home to his wife, slipping into bed next to her for a while as he waited for her to wake up.
The day brought fewer and fewer. The night brought even less and while Kael was more than content to spend his time with Kerra, the city was becoming a sort of strange ghost town and a dead city could not sustain them forever. She would need fresh blood sooner or later. Kael began to devote his days to looking for the still most populated areas of the city but as the days passed, so did the life of the city. When he returned home one evening after a near fruitless expedition, he returned to their bed to find it was empty; she had gone out on her own. He waited around the penthouse for her to come home, not wanting to get in the way of her fun if she had found any to have, but as the night wore on and she had not come home, Kael began to worry. They had not spent much time apart since their binding and while he did not have to worry about her now during the day since his mother had recently gifted her with protection from the sun, this entire situation felt wrong. He needed to find her, so he set out to do so.
He had a strong link to her, one that currently gave no indication that she might be in any danger, and he followed it but she was nowhere to be found. She was alive, because the link was still there just as strong as ever. He began to follow her energy trail which led him through the city and into the outskirts, to the surrounding forest. Hours seemed to pass without any sign of her but he would never stop searching. Her energy trail continued to lead him deep into the forest until a thick fog surrounded him and blinded him to his surroundings. He tried to fly above the fog but it seemed that the only way out of it was either to go back the way he came or try to go through it. And he was not going back without Kerra. So his only option was to go through it. Her energy trail had led him this far. Either she was lost in this fog somewhere or she had come through the other side, wherever the other side of it was. Kael landed back on the damp ground and he let her energy trail lead him.
After what seemed like hours, Kael had already begun to feel his patients thinning but he was thankful that the link they shared still gave him no indication that she might be hurt or in danger. Still, he wanted, needed to find her. Finally, the fog began to lift and Kael could hear others as he saw a park just in front of him. He looked over the few faces that he saw, stealing enough of their energy to familiarize himself with them and the potential threat that they could pose, dismissed them and continued to follow Kerra's energy trail. As always, Kael would blend in with the mortals. But his priority was to find his wife.
